Big second half leads Dutchmen to win over Nichols in Florida

DAYTONA BEACH, FL -- Freshman guard Steve Madej (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) scored a career high 15 points and Union erased a 13 point halftime deficit in a 67-65 win over Nichols in the Land of Magic Classic at Embry Riddle's ICI Center Thursday afternoon.

Madej had played just two minutes in the eight-game season entering this contest, but wound up making six of 14 shots from the floor and adding six rebounds. Brian Scordato (Mt. Kisco, NY/Horace Greeley) scored 16 points and also added six boards, while making all four of his free throws. John Cagianello (Wethersfield, CT/Loomis Chaffee) and Joseph Mackey (Flushing, NY/Archbishop Molloy) each added 10 points for the 6-3 Dutchmen.

Nichols, 3-4, was led by Casey Butler, who had 18 points, and Chris Vallee, who pulled down 10 rebounds with his 13 points. Greg Sturdahl and Justin Lewis each had 10 points.

Union forced 21 turnovers in the contest and had a 48-39 rebounding advantage over the Bison.

The Dutchmen are idle until next weekend, when they host the Sig Makofski Invitational. Union will face St. Joseph's at 8 p.m. on January 6 following the Oneonta/Richard Stockton 6 p.m. game. The consolation and championship are Saturday.
